Neck and Arm Pain Causes and Treatments in Highland and Crown Point, Indiana

Did you know that neck and arm pain can be connected? Neck pain can sometimes spread to one or both of your arms, and even to your hands.

When the nerves from the neck feel irritated, symptoms of pain and numbness can start to reach other parts of the body, such as the arms and hands, which is called nerve related pain. While it’s not a condition in itself, it is the sign of something bigger.

At Kanuru Interventional Spine and Pain Institute, we can help you identify what hides beneath this pain and offer the treatment that you need.

Causes

Neck pain has long been a common complaint for people across all age groups. Whether brought on by bad posture or a pinched nerve, it can be quite debilitating and interfere with everyday life. Causes include:

  • Bad posture at work (e.g., slouching in front of the computer)
  • A herniated disc
  • Underlying spinal issues
  • Aging
  • Accidents
  • Simple daily strain
  • Injuries in the neck or head
  • Previous issues with neck pain
  • Whiplash injury

Arm pain that stems from neck issues can be caused by problems in your cervical spine, and it is called cervical radiculopathy. When this happens, the pain that starts in the neck radiates to the shoulder and down the arm, causing muscle weakness and numbness as well.

What You Feel

The manifestation of this condition can be different from person to person. For some patients, it can appear without anticipation. For others, it can show up gradually over time until they feel like they just “woke up” with it. The most common symptoms are:

  • Pain in the back or sides of your neck, which probably extends to the shoulder regions, arm and hand.
  • Having tension headaches, where the pain goes to the back of your head, inside of your ear or behind your eyes.
  • Pain when laying down or moving.
  • Tightness in the neck and upper shoulders’ muscles, specifically if you’ve been in a still position for too much time.
  • The neck can’t turn as far as it normally does, for example, when turning around to see something behind your back.
  • Tightness or tenderness when touching the muscles and joint of the neck.
  • Feeling dull to sharp pains, burning pain, tingling and numbing sensations, during periods of time.
